Vercors was very well-known for its maquis from 1941 to 1944. Above all a refuge for young people, the mountains formed a citadel for the famous 'Plan Montagnard'. Unfortunately, events took a different turn and the maquisards and the civil populations were attacked and repressed by an enemy that was both more numerous and better armed.
In 2014, celebrations, commemorations, conferences, historic excursions and more take place all year long to pay tribute to those fallen. We salute the commitment and courage of an entire population and revisit the events that took place exactly 70 ago. All year round, you can follows the 'Chemins de la liberté (Freedom Trails)' and visit historical sites and museums. Note the names of the streets in Villard de Lans... and take advantage of a hiking excursion to visit Valchevrière.
